For we, the Iranian, the first night the winter season called as YALDA NIGHT (2008/12/20) is a very important occasion. The ceremonial Yalda is rooted in our ancient civilization and culture. Tonight is the longest night of the year, it is about
1 minute longer than the other winter nights. We, Iranian, welcome the winter at this night. Among the traditions related to Yalda is the relatives gathering in the elders' home reciting Hafez's poems and narrating the stories of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh. We have a variety of things to eat at this occasion from watermelon to pomegranate and died fruit & nuts. The interesting thing is to insist in having watermelon, which is a summer fruit and is hard to find in winters, on such a night. This year, Yalda, as the first winter night has presented us the first snowfall of the year. The streets of Tehran are now covered with the white, beautiful flakes of snow. Happy Yalda Night.
